Is a cover letter required for Italy?

Unlike some Schengen countries, Italian consulates in the US do not list a cover letter as a required document. However, a one-page letter can clarify your itinerary, purpose, and finances — especially for first-time applicants or unusual trips.

What to include

• Your full name, passport number and travel dates.
• Purpose of the trip (tourism) and itinerary summary.
• Who is paying and a brief note on your financial situation.
• Your ties to the US (job, family, home) and intent to return.
