Schengen Travel Insurance for Italy: Requirements

What the consulates require

You must provide a letter or certificate from your insurance company covering medical expenses, hospitalization and repatriation for the entire duration of your stay in the Schengen area. Minimum coverage is €30,000 (some consulates require $50,000).

What is NOT accepted

• An insurance card alone.
• A policy booklet without a letter.
• A letter that doesn't state the coverage benefits and amount.

Quick tip

Inadequate medical coverage is the single most common rejection reason at some consulates. Buy from a reputable provider and make sure the four benefits — medical, hospitalization, evacuation, repatriation — are itemized in the letter.
